* Ballard Fuel Cell Buses for Brazil, Belgian Busbuilder Van Hool; Ballard Sets Million-Miles Mark: Vancouver-based Ballard Power Systems has signed a Letter of Intent with the city of Sao Paulo for 25 FCvelocity-HD6 fuel cell modules to power 25 buses in Brazil’s largest city. The fuel cells are to be delivered some time this year, Ballard said in a Dec. 27 announcement, but so far no word who will supply the buses. Chances are they will be Brazil-made: The first of three demonstrator buses, built by Brazilian busmakers Marcopolo and Tuttotrasporti, started operations in the summer of 2009 (H&FCL Aug. 09). The buses are being acquired under Brazil’s National Plan on Climate Change, a set of inter-ministerial programs designed to cut emissions in the transportation, forestry, industrial and energy sectors.
