Katrina Cuts Hydrogen Deliveries from
Air Products New Orleans Facilities
LEHIGH VALLEY, PA, September 1 - Air Products reported
yesterday that extensive damage caused by Hurricane Katrina to the
company's industrial gas complex in New Orleans, LA, is affecting the
companys ability to deliver hydrogen for an extended period
of time.
The company doesnt say so outright, but it appears that
hydrogen delivery from New Orleans is, at the very least, severely
curtailed for the time being. The company said that although tbe full
extent of damage to the New Orleans facility is still unknown, it
will be working to bring operations back on line safely.
Restart of the plant will be largely dependent on the
availability of power, utilities, communications, other infrastructure
access, and the extent of the damage, it added.
Together with a temporary, scheduled shutdown at the company Sarnia,
Ontario plant because of a shutdown at its suppliers feedgas
plant, the company has declared force majeure for liquid hydrogen at
these two facilities Force majeure is defined as an event that cannot
reasonably be expected or anticipated - an Act of God.
Air Products says it is actively working to assist customers with
their supply needs, including obtaining product from other sources and
geographies. Contact: Air Products (media), Beth Mentesana,

(If warranted, a more detailed report on Katrinas effects on
hydrogen and fuel cell activities will appear in the next October issue
of The Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Letter.)
