Bush Proposes More Funds for H2
Research in State-of-The-Union Address
WASHINGTON, DC, February 1 - The Presidents new 2007
budget will include $289 million for developing hydrogen fuel cells and
hydrogen cars, an increase of $53 million over the current 2006 budget,
the White House Press Office said in a background release amplifying
last nights State of The Union address by President Bush.
The funding request represents the latest installment of the $1.2
billion Hydrogen Fuel Initiative Bush outlined in his 2003 State of the
Union address. The new numbers are part of the Advanced Energy
Initiative to Help Break Americas Dependence on Foreign Sources of
Energy, outlined in the presidents speech to Congress last
night.
Other requests for 2007 include $281 million for clean coal
technology; $54 million for the FutureGen initiative to develop an
emissions-free coal power plant; $148 million for the Solar America
Initiative, up $65 million over FY 2006, to accelerative photovoltaic
development; $44 million for wind energy research, a $5 million increase
over last years levels; and $150 million for the Biorefinery
Initiative - r&d in bio-based transportation fuels such as ethanol from
wood chips, stalks or switch grass, a $59 million increase over the
current 2006 budget.
(A more detailed article will be in the upcoming March 2006 issue
of "The Hydrogen &Fuel Cell Letter").
