DoE Requests $195.8 million for Hydrogen Technologies, up 20%,
in New 07 Budget
WASHINGTON, DC, Feb. 7 - At $195.8 million, the Hydrogen
Technologies budget request for fiscal year 2007 by the Bush
administration is up roughly 20% over what was actually appropriated in
FY 06, $155.6 million.
The total Energy Department 07 request for the presidents
Hydrogen Fuel Initiative, including funds for fossil energy, nuclear
energy, science and also for relevant programs within the Transportation
Department, is $289.5 million, said Steven G. Chalk, DoEs Hydrogen
Program Manager, during an Internet-accessible briefing yesterday.
Chalks presentation was one of many detail briefings here Monday
when the huge Federal budget request of $2.77 trillion was
announced.
Of the entire Hydrogen, Fuel Cells & Infrastructure Technologies
program grouped in the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy
(EERE), Technology Validation is slated to receive the biggest chunk,
$39.6 million, followed by Fuel Cell Stack Component R&D ($38.1
million), Hydrogen Production & Delivery ($36.8 million), and Hydrogen
Storage R& D ($34.6 million).
The request makes no provision for Congressionally mandated
activities which last year accounted for $42.5 million out of the $155.6
million total.
The entire EERE budget which includes activities such as Biomass and
Biorefinery Systems R&D, Building Technologies, Vehicle Technologies and
Weatherization & Intergovernmental Activities, totals $1.176 billion.
(A detailed article on the 2007 budget request will be in the
forthcoming March issue of "The Hydrogen &Fuel Cell Letter").
