In Landmark Deal, Ballard to Deliver 2,900 Mark 9 Fuel Cells to
General Hydrogen
VANCOUVER, OCT. 12 Ballard Power Systems here has
signed a contract with neighbor General Hydrogen Corp. to deliver 2,900
Mark SSL fuel cells worth about U.S. $22 million for fork lifts
and similar materials handling equipment.
The sale is seen by observers as a landmark sign of viability of fuel
cells - long in coming - in the commercial market place.
In this application, they would replace standard lead acid batteries,
tripling run times, eliminating battery changing and charging and
thereby increasing productivity.
About one quarter of the total will be shipped next year to General
Hydrogen, with the rest to be delivered in 2008, Ballard said. The fuel
cell maker will be paid in successive increments as deliveries are
completed. General Hydrogen is headquartered in nearby Richmond, British
Columbia.
The numbers take on added significance in light of the fact that
Ballard had shipped only 100 of this fuel cell model through September
30. It means that Ballard has now exceeded its previously stated goal of
shipping or booking 300 of these units this year by almost an order of
magnitude .
(A full report will appear in the upcoming November issue of "The
Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Letter.")
