Ford Introduces 350-Mile Range Fuel Cell
Explorer SUV at Los Angeles Auto Show
LOS ANGELES, NOVEMBER 28 - Ford Motor Co. entered the fuel
cell sweepstakes big time with a new fuel cell powered Explorer SUV
prototype with what looks like a range unmatched by any other current
fuel cell vehicle - 350 miles (560 km).
The car, which also features electric all-wheel drive, will be
unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show Dec. 1-10 at the Los Angeles
Convention Center here. It will be available to reporters for driving
during media days tomorrow and Nov. 30, Ford said on its media site.
The 6-passenger, 2,560 kg SUV is powered by a 60 kW Ballard Power
Systems fuel cell plus a 50 kW battery, making it a fuel cell hybrid.
The fuel - 10 kg of compressed hydrogen - is stored in a center-mounted
700 bar (10,000 psi) tank in the place normally occupied by the
automatic transmission in production Explorers. Fuel economy is said to
be 35 mph (gasoline equivalent), and the four wheels are powered by dual
65 kW electric motors.
(A fuller version of this report will be in the online and print
December issues of The Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Letter)
