GM Shifts Hundreds of Fuel Cell Engineers To Prepare for Volume Production

DETROIT June 19 – General Motors is gearing up for fuel cell car production: The carmaker said late last week it is moving more than 400 fuel cell engineers from advanced development laboratories to GM’s Powertrain Group to begin production engineering of fuel cell systems. Another 100 will transfer to GM’s Global Product Development organization to start the process of integrating fuel cells into future vehicles.

Only about 150 fuel cell scientists and support staff will stay on in GM’s Research and Development center to continue research in hydrogen storage, fuel cells and program commercialization, the company said June 15.

The fuel cell engineering team will be headed by J. Byron McCormick, currently executive director of GM’s fuel cell activities. He will report simultaneously to Dan Hancock, GM’s powertrain vice president, and John Buttermore, GM’s powertrain vice president, global manufacturing.

(A full version of this report will appear in the upcoming July issue of “The Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Letter”.)
