Briefly Noted: Karlsruhe Hydrogen Safety Center

On the other side of the Atlantic, what is described as Europe’s largest hydrogen safety center will be officially launched near the end of this month. The Center for Hydrogen Safety Research at the Research Center Karlsruhe, Germany, will open its doors to media and industry on Oct. 27. Facilities include a large test stand room for large-scale hydrogen release tests and two large steel testing containers for hydrogen distribution and combustion experiments. The new test facilities will expand the center’s existing capabilities for numerical simulation of the handling of hydrogen. It is part of the European Union-wide “HySafe” network of excellence. The parent research center, located in Karlsruhe in southwestern Germany, is one of Europe’s largest science and engineering centers in Europe. Formerly a primary center for nuclear engineering, its research focus has shifted to other wider areas in recent years. It is funded jointly by the German government and the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg. Contact: (media), phone 0049/7247/82-2463; fax 049/7247 82-4777; e-mail info@oea.fzk.de; web http://www.fzk.de/.
