Briefly Noted: Boeing Record Solar Cell

New record-setting solar cell from Boeing: Spectrolab, Inc., a Boeing subsidiary based in Sylmar, CA has achieved a new world record in terrestrial solar cell efficiency. The high-efficiency, multijunction cell mated to a concentrator system achieved 40.7 % conversion of sunlight into electricity, Boeing announced. The cell used what Boeing described as a new class of metamorphic semiconductor materials that permit much greater freedom in multijunction design for optimal conversion, Dr. Richard R. King, principal investigator in this effort, said. The terrestrial cell uses the same technology Spectrolab uses in its space-based cell, an approach that the company says is expected to “dramatically reduce the cost of generating electricity from solar energy.”
