Fast Forward: Fuel Cells for NY Metro North?

Fuel cells for New York’s suburban trains? Connecticut’s Academy of Science and Engineering has been asked to do a $64,000 study of using fuel cells to power trains and stations on Metro North Railroad’s New Haven Line, reported the Feb. 9 Stamford Advocate and confirmed by an Academy spokesman. The study was mandated by the state legislature last year as part of Connecticut’s $2.3 billion transportation package, and it is expected to be completed some time this summer. Other study participants are Connecticut Light & Power and Logan Energy Corp., Roswell, GA a company that has designed and installed fuel cell systems in various parts of the country. Connecticut is home to three important fuel cell designers and producers, United Technologies’ UTC Power, South Windsor; FuelCell Energy, Danbury; and Proton Energy, Wallingford, as well as a couple dozen component suppliers.
