Briefly Noted: FuelCell Energy Multi-MW SOFC Project

The U.S. Energy Department has selected Danbury, CT-based FuelCell Energy, Inc. as prime contractor of a third project team to develop a coal-based multi-megawatt solid oxide fuel cell system of 100 MW or larger, the company said. The total award for the 10-year program is about $85 million subject to negotiation of a final agreement. Separately, the company unveiled a new Direct FuelCell/Turbine combined cycle power plant. The hybrid system set an efficiency record with 56% electrical efficiency in the sub-megawatt class in an 800 hour continuous run. The system consisted of a 250 kW molten carbonate Direct FuelCell mated to a 60 kW microturbine from Capstone Turbine Corp. Following additional tests, the system will be installed at the Deaconess Billings Clinic in Montana to provide base load power.
