Briefly Noted: Greenpeace Uranium Study

The world's uranium deposits, the source of nuclear power production, will be exhausted in 65 years at the latest, even with reduced demand. Thus, nuclear power cannot contribute significantly to German - and presumably the world's - long-term energy security, nor to a solution for global warming issues, a new report by the German section of "Greenpeace" says. The study, presented in early February in Berlin, is based on data from the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). At present, nuclear power covers only 7 % of global energy demand, and if that share becomes bigger to help improve global climate, the world's total uranium resources would be exhausted even sooner, the report says. The report is available in German in both 77-page long and 5-page short versions on the German Greenpeace website.
