Briefly Noted: FuelCell Energy Plant for Postal Service

Another Fuel Cell for the U.S. Postal Service: FuelCell Energy Inc., Danbury, CT says it has sold a 250 kW Direct FuelCell® power plant via its distribution partner, Chevron Energy Solutions, to the U.S. Postal Service’s San Francisco Processing and Distribution Center. The plant, of the molten carbonate type, is expected to provide part of the base load heat and power requirements, together with a separate 285 kW system of solar-generated electricity. The hybrid power plant is part of a comprehensive system upgrade by the Chevron subsidiary for the processing center and the Embarcadero Postal Center. Four years ago, the Postal Service installed what was then the biggest fuel cell power plant yet, a 1 MW system at a mail processing center in Anchorage, AK (H&FCL Sept. 00), a phosphoric acid plant built by International Fuel Cells, now UTC Fuel Cells.
