Gov. Schwarzenegger Names Alan Lloyd New California EPA Secretary
SACRAMENTO, CA - Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has appointed Dr. Alan Lloyd, long-term advocate of hydrogen energy and currently chairman of Californias Air Resources Board (CARB), as new secretary of the states Environmental Protection Agency (CalEPA).
Lloyd succeeds Terry Tamminen who last month was moved up by Schwarzenegger to the key position of cabinet secretary, the direct liaison between the governor and cabinet members, including all agency directors and department directors (H&FCL Dec. 04).
Alan shares my commitment to continuing Californias tradition of strong environmental protection and balancing the preservation of our environment and resource conservation with economic growth and fiscal responsibility, said Schwarzenegger in his mid-December announcement. Alans track record of success and balanced approach as chairman of the Air Resources Board and expertise in environmental policy and management makes him a tremendous asset to the people of California.
I am thrilled Governor Schwarzenegger has given me the opportunity to lead Californias efforts to protect our environment, Lloyd said. I look forward to working with the governor to continue to build upon the environmental accomplishments of his administration.
With more than 25 years of experience with environmental issues, Lloyd has been in the forefront in California and internationally in promoting environmentally benign hydrogen energy technology. Before joining CARB as chairman in 1999, Lloyd was executive director of the Energy and Environmental Center at the Desert Research Institute in Nevada. From 1988 to 1995, he was chief scientist for the South Coast Air Quality Management District, the air quality watchdog agency for the Los Angeles Basin. Before that, beginning in 1976, he served in many positions at Environmental Research and Technology, Inc. (now ENSR), a global provider of environmental and energy development services in Westford, MA.
Lloyd is a member of the U.S. Energy Departments Hydrogen Technical Advisory Panel, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agencys Clean Air Act Advisory Committee, the National Research Councils Transportation Research Boards Committee on Alternative Transportation, and the Air and Waste Management Association.
