Briefly Noted: Smart Fuel Cell

Smart Fuel Cell AG (SFC), the innovative Munich-based maker of direct methanol fuel cells, claims significant cost reduction via a new membrane. The company said in a Feb. 28 release the new membrane reduces the need for platinum as catalyst by at least 50%. The new concept also incorporates a monopolar stack design instead of the usual bipolar construction, resulting in 70% reduction of stack components and significant further miniaturization of the total system. The company didn’t provide any per-Watt or -kW cost figures, nor any other details. SFC was one three energy companies named 2005 “Technology Pioneers” at the recent World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Contact: SFC, +49/89/607-454-60, e-mail kontakt@smartfuelcell.de
