YOKOHAMA - With just over 2000 participants, the 15th World Hydrogen Energy Conference, held here in this forward-looking city June 27-July 2, was the biggest yet in this series that began in the early 1970s.

LAKE FOREST, IL/BRUSSELS - Tenneco Automotive, a $3.8 billion maker of emission and ride control equipment for cars and trucks, is the only U.S.-based company taking part in a startup multi-year European project that aims at developing a production-ready fuel cell power plant.

SHANGHAI - The European Union is offering financial aid to Chinese researchers, including specialists in hydrogen and fuel cell technologies, under its Sixth Framework Programme.

BP Opens First H2 Station in S.E. Asia for F-Cell Cars with Air Products Equipment
SINGAPORE - Southeast Asia’s first hydrogen station opened here last month, initially to provide fuel for DaimlerChrysler F-Cell fuel cell vehicles but also as a way station and first step for the owner, BP, towards expansion into future Asian markets such as China.

Honda’s second-generation fuel cell vehicle, the 2005 Honda FCX, has been certified by both the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the California Air Resoruces Board (CARB) for commercial use.

Hydrogenics, Corp. Toronto, has won a contract from Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems, Waltham, MA for an integrated fuel cell power system as possible replacement for military batteries or diesel generators.

Briefly Noted: U-Cal Berkeley Study
A new report by the University of California, Berkeley’s Renewable and Appropriate Energy Laboratory (RAEL) says California is on the verge of becoming a global leader in clean energy with a sustainable hydrogen economy but only if there is strategic investment in renewable energy research and development.

Briefly Noted: Rutgers Report
And in New Jersey, Rutgers University’s Center for Energy, Economic and Environmental Policy (CEEEP), New Brunswick, has issued its first report in which it recommends the state undertake five basic steps to determine whether it’s in New Jersey’s interest to promote hydrogen energy.

CLARIFICATIONS & CORRECTIONS
To clarify, the second paragraph in the July 4 issue lead story, “GHW Presents Advanced Pressurized Alkaline Electrolyzer at HYFORUM,” should say that the ”electrolyzers operating successfully in Hamburg and Reykjavik were made by Hydro, GHW’s partner and parent, not by GHW.” The third paragraph sentence about complexity, cost and susceptibility to failure should have referred to GHW’s 1999 450 kW, 30 bar electrolyzer at Munich airport.
