GM Unveils H2 Fuel Cell Version of “Volt” Concept at Shanghai Auto Show
SHANGHAI - In a not-so-subtle hint that it may be betting on Asia to move first on hydrogen fuel cell transportation, General Motors last month unveiled the fuel cell version of its new concept Volt electric car here at the Shanghai Auto Show.

NEW YORK/BERLIN - The “New York Times” is commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Hindenburg airship disaster this month, contrasting its techno-disaster connotations then with its promise of clean hydrogen energy now.

H2 & Fuel Cell Exhibit Draws Record Exhibitors, Highlights Stationary Power, R&D
HANNOVER - Hot new developments were scarce at the 13th Hydrogen + Fuel Cells Group Exhibit, part of the annual giant Hannover Industrial Fair here, but exhibitors and organizers alike were really happy with the event because of strong, sustained interest by the professionals.

CORRECTION: The name of the Czech airplane company that furnishes the Rapid 200 two-seater for the EU’s fuel cell ENFICA project (H&FCL April 07) was misstated. The company’s correct name is “JIHLAVAN airplanes, s.r.o. (Ltd.)”, (not Jihlavan Aircraft).

BERNE, SWITZERLAND - The term “flying fish” takes on a whole new meaning with the successful launch and flight of small model jet plane here last month powered by a hydrogen fuel cell.

Despite Big Challenges, Fuel Cells Remain Best Long-Term ZEV Option, New Report Says
SACRAMENTO, CA - Fuel cell electric vehicles, despite a number of hurdles that must be overcome, remain the best long-term option for a true zero emission vehicle (ZEV), but they are, at a minimum, eight to ten years away, concludes a new report by California’s Air Resources Board (ARB).

Ohio State Student Team Builds Fuel Cell Speed Record Racer for Bonneville
COLUMBUS, OH - Fuel cell power will be coming to the Bonneville Salt Flats this summer with a student team from Ohio State’s College of Engineering that will try to set a new land speed record with the Buckeye Bullet 2 - the first-ever fuel cell streamliner designed for such an attempt.

In what seems a somewhat unorthodox strategy, Plug Power announced last month it is negotiating with General Hydrogen a possible takeover of the Canadian company.

In another acquisition deal, Protonex Technology Corp., Southborough, MA a developer of portable fuel cell power systems, has bought Mesoscopic Devices, Broomfield, CO, for $27.6 million.

Solid oxide fuel cell developer Versa Power Systems, Inc. says the U.S. Energy Department has accepted technical results and manufacturing cost projections.

Rolls Royce Fuel Cell Systems (US), Canton, OH in what it calls a “strategic acquisition” has acquired the assets of Ohio-based SOFCo-EFS Holdings.

The U.S. Energy Department plans to make available $8.2 million over four years for six hydrogen storage research projects.

Mountain View, CA-based PolyFuel Inc. has received two what it calls “broad patents for fundamental fuel cell technology.”

UTC Power, South Windsor, CT has signed off on a number of agreements with geothermal power plant developer Raser Technologies, Provo, UT.
